Today I am going to share with you some helpful information related to GATE and some pro tips and tricks to qualify for your GATE examination in your first attempt.

So, Stay Tuned ...

All About GATE Examination:

Gate stands for Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering. The exam is conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and is jointly conducted by IISc Bangalore & some of the old IITs of our country i.e. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati.

This exam is one of the most prestigious exams in India not only because it is conducted by IITs but also because of the galore of opportunities available after cracking GATE.

As I mentioned earlier this exam is meant for students coming from a science background and holding BTech/BE Degree.

By scoring good marks you can get a key to some reputed institutions like IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc Banglore and other government/private engineering colleges to continue with your higher studies like MTech, Ph.D., ME, FPM (Fellowship Program in Management), PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) and other post-graduate programs.

Now you will notice in many public sector undertakings has stopped conducting their entrance for recruiting engineers; instead, of that, they invite for Personal Interview (PI) and Group Discussion (GD) which will be based on your GATE score.

Based on your performance in the interview and group discussion and the marks scored in GATE, your selection is done.

Paper Pattern:

Talking more about the examination,

  • The duration of the paper is 3 hrs.

  • The total number of questions asked is 65

  • The total mark of the paper is 100.

Now to understand more clearly let me divide this into three parts:

  • The paper will divide into two sections i.e. Technical and Non-Technical. In technical the questions will be based on the Core Subjects of Engineering and Engineering Mathematics. In Non-Technical, the questions will be based on General Aptitude.

  • The questions will be asked in two ways i.e. Multiple Choice Questions & Numerical Answer Type Questions.

  • The paper will have 30 questions carrying 1 marks each and 35 questions carrying 2 marks each. (30*1=30 and 35*2=70   So  30+70=100)

Talking about the core subjects which are important for GATE examinations are mentioned below:

1) Core Subjects of Electronics- Digital Circuits, Analog Circuits, Control Systems, Communications, Electromagnetics, Electronic Devices, Networks, Signals, and Systems.

2) Core Subjects of Electrical- Power System, Electric Circuits, Control Systems, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines, Signals and Systems, Electromagnetic Fields, Analog and Digital Electronics & Electrical and Electronic Measurements.

3) Core Subjects of Civil- Structural Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering & Water Resources Engineering.

4) Core Subjects of Mechanical- Applied Mechanics and Design, Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences & Material, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering.

5) Core Subjects of Instrumentation- Measurements, Control Systems, Electrical Circuits, Digital Electronics, Analog Electronics, Signals and Systems, Communication and Optical Instrumentation & Sensors and Industrial Instrumentation.

6) Core Subjects of Computer Science- Databases, Algorithms, Digital Logic, Compiler Design, Operating System, Computer Networks, Theory of  Computation, Programming and Data Structures & Computer Organization and Architecture.

Now, I'll discuss the core chapters of Engineering Mathematics which are important for your GATE examinations.

They are:

  • Linear Algebra

  • Vector Analysis

  • Calculus

  • Transform Theory

  • Complex Variables

  • Differential Equations

  • Numerical Methods

  • Probability and Statistics

(NOTE: You will notice guys these are the units which you have gone through in your academics of 1st and 2nd year of engineering.)

Now, I'll discuss the topics of General Aptitude which are important for your GATE examinations.

I've divided them into two parts i.e. Verbal Ability & Numerical Ability.

Let's look at topics covering Verbal Ability:

  • Word Groups

  • Verbal Analogies

  • Instructions

  • Verbal Deduction

  • English Grammer

  • Sentence Completion

  • Critical Reasoning

Now let's look at topics covering Numerical Ability:

  • Numerical Reasoning

  • Data Interpretation

  • Numerical Computation

  • Numerical Estimation

Weightage Of Questions

  • Core Subjects of Engineering: 70 Marks

  • Engineering Mathematics: 15 Marks

  • General Aptitude: 15 Marks

NOTE: These marks are not fixed. It may vary but these are the approx. you can expect.

Negative Marking

As you know, every competitive exam has negative markings. Now let me cover the negative marking of the GATE examination.

A) In Multiple Choice Question

  • 1 Mark Question: 0.33 Mark (1/3 of 1 Mark)

  • 2 Marks Question: 0.66 Mark (2/3 of 1 Mark)

B) In Numerical Answer

  • 1 Mark Question: No Negative Marking

  • 2 Marks Question: No Negative Marking.
